On July 1, USD 239 North Ottawa County Public Schools officially expanded its boundaries as part of the dissolution of USD 334 Southern Cloud. Voters of USD 334 decided the fate of the former school district during the November 4, 2025, election. According to the Kansas State Department of Education's boundary information, USD 239 has grown from approximately 418 to approximately 482 square miles, an increase of about 64 square miles. The district now extends north to U.S. Highway 24 and east to 240th Road, just outside of Miltonvale. Several other school districts (Beloit, Concodia, Clifton-Clyde, and Clay Center) also experienced border changes as a result of Southern Cloud's dissolution.
"The dissolution of USD 334 is not likely to increase USD 239’s enrollment,” said Dr. Stevens, Superintendent of USD 239. "Many of USD 334’s secondary students left the school district when it no longer offered extracurricular activities as part of its program a few years ago." Dr. Stevens added, “We have had several students over the past two years come to our school district due to Southern Cloud’s anticipated closure. Our staff has been very welcoming to the new students and has worked hard to ensure their transition has gone smoothly.”
While USD 239’s student enrollment is expected to change very little, the North Ottawa County Public School District will gain several new commercial and utility companies within its boundaries. The dissolution of USD 334 reflects the ongoing challenges posed by the declining population across Kansas communities and school districts.
