USD 239 North Ottawa County Public Schools announced Monday that classes will dismiss early due to the threat of severe weather expected to move into north-central Kansas later this afternoon. Forecasts for Minneapolis, Kansas, at 3:00 p.m. on May 18 call for strong thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, and possible tornado activity across the region.

District officials said the decision was made out of caution, noting that student safety remains the top priority. The district covers 418 square miles, and weather conditions can vary significantly from one end of the district to the other, especially in rural areas where many students travel long distances by bus.

Superintendent Curtis Stevens added, “When we dismiss early, that also means all practices, activities, and events are cancelled so students and staff can get home safely before storms arrive. I urge everyone to keep an eye on the weather and stay safe.”
