The Minneapolis Junior Senior High FFA team traveled to Abilene last weekend to compete in the meat judging contest. Aidan Hessman earned 2nd place, Lindy Huiett placed 5th, and Layton Christensen secured 9th. The team achieved 3rd place overall. Additional members representing the chapter included Callan Rensink, Coy Malmberg, Logan Biggs, Max Helget, Phlynn Ocker, Cooper Courson, and Lydia Gawith, all of whom contributed to a strong day of competition.
FFA Sponsor Christina Wallace described the competition and skills needed, explaining, “The meat judging event challenges students to identify and evaluate meat in terms of quality through yield grading carcasses and placing classes on cuts of meat. Students also answer questions about the cuts of meat and why they rated the beef as they did. Big picture—students are learning what the best cuts of meat look like when they go to purchase them at a store in terms of flavor and cutability. They also gain insights into their ultimate goal as a producer. It’s an actual test of focus and skill, and I couldn’t be prouder of how hard this team worked and how well they represented our chapter.”
Congratulations to all who participated in this event! The Minneapolis FFA Chapter participating in competitions of this nature is a prime example of how North Ottawa County Public Schools offer their students hands-on learning that extends well beyond the classroom. #LionPride
