Inspection

Minneapolis, Kansas, proudly continues its tradition of hosting a one-of-a-kind community-owned carnival, featuring restored rides from Wichita's former Joyland Amusement Park. Located at the Ottawa County Fairgrounds, these vintage rides operate thanks to the dedication of local volunteers who work tirelessly year-round to maintain and prepare them.

On July 7, Chet Smith, President of Allegiant Safety, Inc., conducted a comprehensive annual safety inspection, ensuring every ride meets strict safety standards. These inspections are essential, requiring expertise in mechanical systems, electrical work, and safety compliance—skills found in many career and technical fields. During the safety inspection, USD 239 North Ottawa County Public School Superintendent Dr. Curtis Stevens observed the inspections to learn more about the process and consider future service learning and partnership opportunities for how the school district can help contribute to this endeavor.

This cherished tradition draws visitors across Kansas, offering a rare “good old-fashioned fair” experience. However, the volunteer group needs younger community members to sustain this unique long-term legacy. Very few communities still operate their own carnival, making Minneapolis a true gem in preserving Kansas fair traditions.
