Lady Lions End Season in Semi-Finals

by John Darrow

March 03, 2008

Minneapolis entered the Sub-State as the fourth seed and earned a home game against Clifton-Clyde.  The Lady Lions jumped out to a 10-7 first quarter lead and increased it to 17-13 by half-time.  The third quarter belonged to the Lady Eagles as they soared to a 25-27 lead over the hometown Lady Lions.  Then it began to rain three’s for MHS.  The Lady Lions who had scored 25 points through three quarters, scored 23 in the fourth.  This all added up to a 48-40 win and a trip to Ell-Saline to take on the number one seed, Osborne.  “In the fourth quarter, we were very aggressive offensively and it showed on the scoreboard,” commented Coach Darrow.

The next task for Minneapolis was the number four state ranked Lady Bulldogs from Osborne.  The Lady Bulldog jumped to an early 12-19 lead on Minneapolis.  In the second quarter, the Lady Lions fought back and were down 21-29 at half-time.  The third quarter was just like the second with Osborne outscoring Minneapolis by only one, but now leading 32-41 heading into the final period.  With the season on the line, the Lady Lions had to come out and take more risks defensively and gave up some easy baskets to the Lady Bulldogs.  The Lady Lions fell 36-51, ending their season.  “I knew that we had to weather the storm at the beginning of the game.  We gave up too many easy baskets early which hurt us in the end.  The one thing about this team is that they never give up.  We cut the lead to six several times, but then Osborne would hit a big bucket.  I am very proud of what the girls have accomplished this year and we will miss the Seniors, Jara Shoemaker, Chantelle Darrow, and Melanie Catron,” stated Coach Darrow.
