Lady Lions Finish 11-9

by John Darrow

February 25, 2008

The regular season ended on Tuesday, February 19, for Minneapolis.  The last two games were against Beloit on Monday and Republic County on Tuesday.

Monday was the night to honor the four seniors, Jara Shoemaker, Chantelle Darrow, Melanie Catron and Anna Capponcini.  The Lady Lions started the night slow and found themselves down, 7-14.  The second quarter was much better for Minneapolis, tying the score at 19 by half-time.  The third quarter was a defensive battle for both teams.  Early in the fourth, the Lady Trojans extended their lead to five at 23-28.  The Lady Lions missed some key shots down the stretch and had to foul to get the ball back.  Beloit hit most of their free-throws, which lead to a 28-40 Minneapolis loss.  “We had our chances throughout the game.  Some nights the shots just don't fall,” commented Coach Darrow.

The Lady Lions had to re-group in a hurry, because they played the following day at Republic County.  After falling behind 0-4, Minneapolis started hitting the long ball….threes….actually five threes in the first half.  This led to a 27-20 half-time lead.  “They kept giving us the open three and we kept hitting it.  This made them play man to man defense, which opened up the lane,” stated Coach Darrow.  In the second half, the Lady Lions built a 15 point lead and hit free-throws to seal the win, 47-35.  “We played about as good of man to man defense as we have played all year.  Our post defense was fantastic and our guards did a great job of covering their shooters,” commented Coach Darrow.
