MJH B-Team Wins in Overtime

by Janette Wedel

January 18, 2008

SES Game  (1-7-08)

The MJH girl’s B-Team faced Southeast of Saline for the 3nd time this season on January 7, 2008.  MJH had been victorious both the previous 2 meetings, and were hoping to make it 3 wins against the Trojans for the year.  The game got off to a slow start, and the Lions found themselves down by a score of 4-13 at half-time.  At the end of 3 quarters, the chances of getting a victory were quickly slipping away as the Trojans had built a 14 point lead against the Lions --- outscoring Minneapolis in every quarter so far.  But the MJH girls had a different outcome in mind.  They got busy in the 4th quarter and scored 14 unanswered points.  Casey Carson made a long distance 3 pointer to put the game into overtime.  Once in OT, the Lions never looked back.  Minneapolis won the game by a score of 22 – 20.  “It was our most exciting game of the season,” stated Coach Wedel.  “I knew we could come back from behind, but didn’t know if there was enough time left on the clock for us to catch up.  Casey’s 3 pointer really gave us the momentum we needed going into overtime to win the game.”  Scorers for Minneapolis were MacKenzie Zimmerman – 9, Casey Carson – 7, and Alyssa Smith, Vyctorya Allison, and Dina Lyne each with 2 points.

The C-Team lost to Southeast of Saline by a score of 4-10.  Jackie Conway and Sarah Snider each contributed 2 points to the efforts for the Lions.

Republic County Game (1-8-08)

In B-Team action, the MJH girls faced a talented Republic County squad.  The Lions were hoping to redeem themselves from a loss to Republic County in the B-Team tournament earlier this season.  Scores were tied at the end of the 1st quarter, and Republic County jumped up to a 3 point lead at half-time with a score of 11-8.  “We tried to press the Buffaloes in the 2nd half, but they were just too good of ball-handlers to be bothered by our press,” said Coach Wedel.  “We have really benefited from the steals we create by pressing all season long, but that was not to happen for us against Republic County.”  The Lions did make it an exciting game, though, losing by just 6 points.  The final score was Republic County 22 and Minneapolis 16.  Scoring for the Lions was Dina Lyne-6, Vyctorya Allison-4, MacKenzie Zimmerman-4, and Casey Carson with 2.

The MJH girls C-team played their final game of the season at home against Republic County.  They were defeated by a score of 37 – 12.  The Lions played hard throughout the entire game, but just could not overcome the Buffaloes.  “We let Republic County out-rebound us, and that lead to Republic County getting too many baskets after 2nd and 3rd shot attempts,” stated Coach Wedel.  “Overall, I was very proud of the improvements made by this group of girls this season.  They were very fun to be around, and they had a good time whether they were winning or losing.  I appreciate their hard work all season long.”  Scoring for Minneapolis in their last game of the season was Sarah Snider – 4, Eileen Price – 4, Shayla Fuller – 2, and Jackie Conway – 2.
