On Thursday, November 29, the Minneapolis Lions hosted 3-1 Southeast of Saline. The junior high girls’ varsity basketball squad won 43-23. Once again the Lions’ defensive pressure made it difficult for their opponent to score, holding the Trojans to ten total points in the first three quarters. “The girls are showing much improvement in their transition game. I was impressed with their passing and how well they looked for one another on the court. We had seven different players score,” commented Coach Baker. Ashlyn Macy had five assists and the team is averaging 20 steals per game. Scoring for the Lions were Kenzie Zimmerman three, Macy four, Kara Fraser five, Jacy Crosson and Kelsie Paige six each, Riley Baker seven, and Ally Steinbrock 12.
In B team action, the girls started out in a press which took the Trojans by surprise, leading to a 14 – 5 score at half time. In the second half, the Lions had trouble finding the basket and scoring proved difficult. Gradually the lead dwindled, but the Lady Lions kept fighting and were determined to bring home another win. “These girls just refuse to give up,” said Coach Wedel. “When we went flat in shooting in the second half, they made up the difference with great defense.” The Lions came out on top, winning by five, with a final score of 19 – 14. Scoring for the Lions was Casey Carson eight, Dina Lyne four, Vyctorya Allison four, and Zimmerman with 3.
In the second game of the season, the MJH girls C-team lost to Southeast of Saline by a score of 6 -16. SES played a man defense, which the C-team had not faced yet in the season. “Although we had practiced on our man-to-man offense in the week just prior to this game, I think it really confused our girls on how to get our offense going,” stated Coach Wedel. “We’ll have to work hard in practice to get better against a man defense, as I’m sure we’ll see it a lot more this season.” Jackie Conway had four of the Lady Lion’s points, and Lindsay Abel added in the remaining two points.
